Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2019 Monthélie Les Duresses offers crisp raspberry and red cherry scents on the nose, which is well defined and floral in style. The palate is fresh on the entry, and quite fleshy for a Monthélie, with a brisk, uncomplicated finish. Fine.Inc. GSTSG$1,837.61 -

The 2021 Monthélie Les Duresses, the only cuvée with a normal yield, sports a touch of reduction on the nose, red cherries and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins; this is quite a "stocky" Monthélie with dark berry fruit on the finish. Fine.Inc. GSTSG$148.87 -

Exotic aromas of pineapple, orange zest, iodine and menthol. Then wonderfully fat and nectar-like, with rare depth of fruit for the vintage. Boasts great richness without any heaviness. Really expands in the mouth and goes on and on on the very long, dry finish. Among the strongest 2004 samples I tasted on my most recent trip.Inc. GSTSG$5,661.00 -

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Montrachet Grand Cru from Domaine des Comtes Lafon has a clean and fresh bouquet, perhaps just a bit too much lime for my liking, although there is mineralité tucked in just behind. The palate is fresh and saline on the entry with a superb line of acidity. There is weight and presence to this Montrachet, and it gains weight and delivers a knockout, extremely persistent finish tinged with lemon thyme and sherbet. Though a little disjointed at present, I suspect this will turn into a wonderful Montrachet with style and class. But be warned that it will require several years in bottle.Inc. GSTSG$6,658.35 -
Wine Advocate (96-98)
The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru is a classic in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of lemon oil, citrus blossom, green apple, mandarin and beeswax, subtly framed by new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, beautifully complete and multidimensional, with a broad, satiny attack, a deep, layered mid-palate and a pure, penetrating finish. Youthfully reserved today, its almost understated elegance conceals impressive reserved of structure and extract.Inc. GSTSG$4,652.75 -

Sweet red berries, crushed flowers and spices are all woven together in the 2012 Volnay Champans. I am not sure I have ever tasted a Champans with this much texture and depth at Lafon. Sweet, silky tannins round out the supple, totally engaging finish. The 2012 is very, very pretty.Inc. GSTSG$224.43 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2020 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru is a little richer and more opulent than the Clos des Chênes, ravishing dark black cherries, cassis and light violet scents burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, the oak a little more pronounced at the moment, therefore I would afford this bold Volnay 4-6 years in bottle if you can wait. Bottled under Diam 30. Vinous - Neal Martin (91)
The 2021 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has an attractive nose with pure red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit and an underlying mineralité. Hints of rose petal emerge with time. The palate offers tart cherry fruit mixed with orange zest, quite lively and focused. It is not a powerful Volnay and does not offer the sensuality of warmer vintages, but it is well balanced with a bright, edgy finish that will partner well at the dinner table. (6x75cl) 2011Vinous (92)
The 2011 Volnay Clos des Chênes is subtle, understated and classy from start to finish. A wine of precision and nuance, the Cloes de Chênes impresses for its balance and harmony. Small red berries, mint, anise and flowers lift out of the glass, beautifully supported by fine, chalky tannins. This is one of the more polished, refined 2011s readers will come across. Not a huge wine, the Clos des Chênes is all about subtlety.Inc. GSTSG$1,825.10 -
Vinous (93)
The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru, which was bottled earlier than the Champans, has an intense nose of black cherries, blueberry, seaweed and iodine. The palate continues that theme: saline on the entry, dense and grippy, and very nicely focused with a lively, lightly spiced finish. Real succulence here, and very good persistence; the elegance is only apparent after the wine is slipping down the throat.Inc. GSTSG$1,266.01 -

(the August hail resulted in a small crop of very ripe grapes, according to Dominique Lafon): Good medium red with the beginning of amber at the edge. Musky, fully ripe aromas and flavors of redcurrant, chocolate and earth, plus a whiff of cedar. (Lafon pointed out that he picked riper and did more extraction back in 2001 than he does today and one can sense that from the nose.) Fat, sweet wine with lovely depth and sound framing acidity; the fruit element is holding nicely. Finishes with fine-grained dusty tannins. Lafon told me that after the hail of 2001 he purchased a vibrating sorting table, and that ended up helping him eliminate the ladybugs in 2004.Inc. GSTSG$357.06 -

The 2008 Volnay-Santenots is incomparably classy. Dark berries, spices and licorice are some of the nuances that emerge from this strikingly pure, beautiful wine. The Santenots possesses marvelous integrity and fabulous overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033.Inc. GSTSG$916.86 -
Vinous (92)
The 2011 Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru has a very well defined bouquet with ebullient redcurrant and crushed strawberry scents, hints of blueberry following just behind. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannin. The oak feels a little strong on the second half, quite savory and meaty in style with a pinch of spice towards the finish. This might be moving into its secondary stage and can be drank now and over the next decade. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.Inc. GSTSG$2,390.33 -

Medium red. Wonderfully deep aromas of kirsch, blackberry, dark chocolate, licorice and minerals are lifted by a floral quality. Concentrated, saline and suave, delivering a terrific core of dark cherry, menthol and spices. A strong spine of refined tannins makes its presence felt late, allowing this lively wine to stretch out impressively on the spicy aftertaste. A classic vintage for this bottling.Inc. Tasted blind, the 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu offers up a deep bouquet of red-black cherries, spices, potpourri, espresso roast and subtle grilled meat. Full-bodied, ample and sappy on the palate, it's rich but vibrant, with fine-grained structuring tannins that are beginning to assert themselves on the finish. Having drunk several bottles of this wine since release, the extent to which it's shutting down is clearly apparent, and at this stage, patience will be required.Inc. GSTSG$2,145.08 -

The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru was opened by Dominique Lafon just because he wanted to compare with the ensuing two vintages. Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish.
