Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (97)The 1990 Grands Echezeaux is one of my very favorite Domaine de la Romanée-Conti wines. Always a bomb, the 1990 is damn delicious. The bouquet alone is so alluring. Bright red-fleshed fruit, crushed berries, spice and mint fill out the layers in a gorgeous, wonderfully expressive, open-knit GE that is an absolute thrill to drink. When it is on, and that is most of the time, the 1990 is lights out. This bottle is tremendous. What a great way to move into the red wines. |

Wine Advocate (98)The 1990 Romanee-Conti should ultimately be the most compelling and complex of the DRC wines. Normally it possesses a lighter color than either La Tache or Richebourg, but in 1990 it boasts a surprisingly saturated color that is the equal of La Tache and Richebourg. The nose offers up sweet, clove, cinnamon, and blackberry aromas intermingled with toasty, smoky new oak. Lavishly rich and full-bodied, with abundant tannins, this profound, surprisingly large-scaled, tannic wine boasts more muscle than usual. Let's hope that the billionaires that buy it have as much taste as money. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025 . |

Vinous (97)The 1990 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes 1er Cru is an absolutely sensational wine that boasts astonishing detail on the nose, unbelievably fresh considering the warmth of the growing season, the stem addition completely subsumed. Hints of sage and oregano are discretely embroidered into the black fruit, later some gorgeous loam-like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, perfect acidity and with just a pinch of black pepper seasoning the black fruit. This is not just well balanced, but conveys an unerring sense of symmetry that leaves you awestruck. With aeration I notice more fruit and just a hint of balsamic towards the finish. Brilliant. Tasted at Tour d’Argent restaurant in Paris. |

Vinous (94)Impressively youthful saturated dark red color. Deep, brooding aromas of black fruits, violet, licorice and tobacco reminded me of Bordeaux, if not Pauillac. Hugely rich, tactile and mouthfilling, with its fleshy black cherry and violet flavors conveying a strong impression of inky depth without coming across as heavy. A classically dry, medicinal grand cru in a distinctly masculine style, this has the stuffing and structure to last 50 years. Spreads out horizontally on the back end, finishing with building ripe, dusty tannins and palate-staining length. Not the last word in finesse but this is an uncanny powerhouse of a Burgundy. Fans of the style may rate it even higher than I do. (13.2% alcohol; 3.33 pH; 3.6 g/l acidity) |

Behold the Henri Jayer Echezeaux Grand Cru 1990, an exquisite embodiment of the mastery and vision of renowned winemaker, Henri Jayer. This iconic red wine originates from the distinguished terroir of the Echezeaux Grand Cru vineyard in the Burgundy region, France. Famed for its exceptional refinement, longevity, and concentrated fruit profile, this Pinot Noir offers an enthralling complexity. Under the hands of Jayer, meticulous attention was bestowed on each vine to yield small berries, maximising flavour intensity. A masterful vinification process ensued with destemming, cold maceration and ageing in oak barrels, the result a wine with an inimitable finesse. Within each bottle of Henri Jayer Echezeaux Grand Cru 1990 lies a glorious mélange of ripe red berries, earthy undertones and nuanced spices. Although Jayer wines are limited due to their exceptional quality and rarity, the 1990 vintage stands as one of the crowning achievements of Henri Jayer's illustrious career. |

Wine Advocate (98)While I entertained higher expectations of the 1989, it was in fact the 1990 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru that emerged as the wine of the tasting, blossoming in the glass with a complex bouquet of confit lemon, orange rind, dried white flowers, pastry cream, warm bread and vanilla pod. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, satiny textured and enveloping, with broad shoulders, a lively spine of acidity and superb amplitude and concentration, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. Powerful and strikingly complete, this is a Chevalier that more than nods to Montrachet in style. But by the numbers alone, it was cropped at 57 hectoliters per hectare and finished up with 14.1% alcohol and pH 3.23. This is by some margin the finest bottle of Leflaive's 1990 Chevalier-Montrachet that I've encountered. |

Wine Advocate (96)The magnificent, healthy medium-to-dark ruby-colored 1990 Richebourg has stupendous depth and complexity to its dark fruit-dominated aromas. Soy and hoisin sauces, cherries, and raspberries can be discerned in its deep, medium-to-full-bodied character. This satin-textured wine remains youthfully vibrant and should benefit from additional cellaring. Projected maturity: 2005-2010+. |

Vinous (91)Good full red. Roasted, liqueur-like nose offers almost pruney ripeness along with a note of menthol and the dried-fruit suggestions of a hot, sunny vintage. Large-scaled and powerful, with its dense, thick roasted fruit, menthol and mocha flavors given shape by adequate acidity. Finishes with strong, slightly drying tannins and a suggestion of orange zest. More impressive than classy or classic, this wine lacks the definition of most of the subsequent vintages at my tasting. Trapet noted that the growing season featured an early bud break and flowering, with substantial millerandage, followed by a very early veraison around July 25, but the drought slowed maturity and the harvest did not take place until September 23. This was the first year the estate carried out a green harvest, he added. (12.75% alcohol) |
