Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (94-96)

There is just one barrel of the 2021 Montrachet Grand Cru this year. This oak comes through quite strongly at the moment, especially compared to the Chevalier alongside, though there is obviously real power and intensity here. The palate is very well-balanced and multi-layered with gorgeous yellow fruit, crushed stone and hints of lemongrass toward the finish. This seems to really fill the mouth with flavour, though it deserves four to five years in bottle. Maybe I just prefer the more nuanced Chevalier.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru uses 15% whole bunch from the 25-year-old vines (the rest are 10 years old). It has a fragrant, elegant bouquet of blackberry, briar, sage and subtle oxtail aromas that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, very fine tannins, and here the Les Amoureuses character really shines. Veins of blue fruit and spices burst through on the finish. There is an appealing crescendo to this wine and it should age with style and panache.

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is blended with 57% whole bunch (one-third of this vineyard has just been replanted). It has a lovely bouquet of black cherries, cherry liqueur, black pepper and just a touch of balsamic. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little more austere than other Les Amoureuses that I have tasted, but leading to a precise finish.

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is in the Mazoyères area and might be renamed in the not-too-distant future. This has a tightly wound bouquet, the 50% whole bunch nicely integrated. Red berry fruit, cola and light spicy notes unfold in the glass but never fully let go. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, layers of candied red fruit and a modicum of spice, fanning out nicely toward the finish. Very fine.

The 2016 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Le Grand Maupertui is showing very well from bottle, opening in the glass with intense aromas of wild blueberry, cassis, spicy soil tones, licorice and violet. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with excellent depth and dimension at the core, displaying more concentration and fine-grained structure than the 2017 rendition and concluding with a pure, mineral finish.

Vinous (98+)

Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Clos de Beze. Pungent aromas of wild red berries, smoke, earth, iron and wild herbs. Almost shockingly silky in the mouth, but with crushed-stone minerality lending force to the blackberry, licorice and earth flavors. Incredibly sappy but edge-free wine with an explosive, endless finish that titillates the salivary glands. Longer than the Clos de Beze but that wine is a bit sweeter today, with darker, more exotic flavors. This Chambertin is not yet showing its flesh but if it puts on weight with extended bottle aging, which I expect it to do, it may eventually merit a perfect score. A monument of the vintage.

A distinctly cool and exuberantly fresh nose features reticent wonderfully spiced notes of various dark berries along with forest floor nuances that include humus and earth. The intensity of the imposingly broad-shouldered and muscular flavors is borderline painful with impressive power on the hugely long finish that is supported by incredibly dense but quite fine-grained tannins. This is magnificent and a wine of class and grace that will justly vie for wine of the vintage honors when it's time for such assessments. It's extremely rare that I put 30-year initial drinking windows for modern red Burgundies, but my prediction is that this stunningly brilliant wine will age glacially.

A brilliantly discreet spicy nose consists of sandalwood, essence of black cherry liqueur, violets and a hint of the sauvage. There is seriously good size, weight and power to the imposingly scaled flavors that display almost painful intensity on the driving, explosively long and very firmly structured finish where a pleasing bead of minerality appears which helps to add lift to the finish. This is powerful and presently quite compact yet my sense is that despite being very tightly wound today, it should progressively unfold such that in 7 to 8 years, it may be sufficiently civilized to enjoy if you don't wish to wait for its full maturity.

The 2015 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is spectacular, wafting from the glass with a dramatic bouquet of sweet grilled meat, red and black fruit, candied peel and rich soil. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and powerful, with a lavishly gourmand attack that evokes the 2009 rendition, but this quickly segues into the mid-palate of an altogether more tautly structural, serious wine, its considerable dimension and concentration underwritten by racy acids. The finish is long and firm. This is a monumental Clos de Bèze built for the long haul.

While the wood treatment is certainly evident it's more subtle on the overtly cool and restrained nose that is markedly spicy with its combination of relatively high-toned aromas of red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and a suggestion of earth. There is excellent power and punch to the large-scaled flavors that are a combination of power and refinement while being blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that imparts a seductive quality to the mouth coating, hugely long and very firmly structured finish. It's going to be interesting in 25 or 30 years' time to see which of these is the better wine, assuming that one of them will be!

Wine Advocate (89+)

Arnaud Ente's 2015 Bourgogne Aligoté offers up aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, blanched almond and honeysuckle—the prelude to a medium-bodied, bright and vibrant wine, with succulent acids, lovely extract and almost crystalline purity. This bottling hails from old vines planted in the commune of Meursault and is routinely one of the finest examples of this variety to be found in all the Côte d'Or. Indeed, while Aligoté is seldom cellared, this will really blossom with a few years' sleep: the 2008, for example, is at the peak of its powers today.

This was followed by the 2016 Bourgogne Aligoté from Domaine Arnaud Ente. “Best wine in the range?” I half-jested, in praise of Ente’s Aligoté rather than disparaging his Chardonnays. Pale silvery in hue, it offers attractive scents of white flowers and apricot blossom, linden and hints of lemon verbena. The 2015 Bourgogne Blanc from Arnaud Ente is initially quite reduced, so decanting is advised if you're drinking this young, but with time in the glass a pretty bouquet of apple, pear and iodine begins to take shape. On the palate, the wine is medium-full, sappy and succulent, with more richness and texture than the Aligoté but without its intensity and purity. This would score higher if it weren't for the overt reduction. Ente's constantly delicious Bourgogne Blanc comes from young vines (a portion in the commune of Puligny, planted in 2002, and the rest in the commune of Meursault, planted in 2012), but while it commands a premium over his Aligoté, I tend to prefer the latter.

Vinous (90)

Pale yellow. Musky yellow fruits and gingery spices on the nose. Ripe and silky, with harmonious acidity framing the sweet peach and nutmeg flavors. A rich village wine, particularly in the context of this cellar, but I like its cut and balance. Underlying lemon and crushed stone flavors give the finish a slight youthful aggressiveness that calls for a year or two of patience. The crop level was 22 hectoliters per hectare in these parcels. Incidentally, Ente describes 2012 as a good year but a bit too rich and thick; he compared it to 2007 and 2008 in quality, adding that the '08s also had too much thickness. (But take advantage of Ente's atypically rich and concentrated 2012 Bourgogne Blanc if you spot a bottle, as this wine, made from parcels in Meursault and Puligny, will be easier to drink at the outset. I rated it 88 points.)

(100% vendange entier; tasted from tank): Dark red with ruby tones. Deeper on the nose than the village Vosne, if not iniitially offering the same éclat of that wine; dark berry aromas are complicated by emerging notes of licorice, violet and mint. Plush and broad but quite airy and dry, offering an intriguing combination of thick texture and crunchy fruit. Plenty of stuffing for its ripe tannins.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a very harmonious, slightly earthy bouquet, the 100% whole bunch lending a very discreet tertiary/sous-bois quality. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit (cranberry, strawberry and pomegranate). This has quite strict tannins and a Morey-inspired, sapid finish. Good potential.

Vinous (89)

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village shows the stems a little more than the Nuits Saint-Georges and will require longer to assimilate. There is quite an attractive tertiary aspect to this Chambolle, hints of brown spices and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, quite fresh with a fine acidity, for me, just missing a little density and grip towards the finish.

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is 60% whole bunch fruit. It has a very natural, precise bouquet of almost crystalline red fruit infused with crushed stone, all correct and very focused. The well-balanced, tensile palate offers fresh acidity and an infectious sense of energy. Why can’t all Clos Vougeot be as refined and enthralling as this? Outstanding.

Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2015 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the more aromatically reticent wines in the range, opening in the glass with notes of coniferous forest floor, raspberry and currant leaf. On the palate, the wine is supple, silky and expansive, with a deep and sapid core of fruit, bright acids, and fine-grained, chalky tannins which assert themselves on the finish. This will need time, but the raw materials are promising.

The 2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Corvées Pagets is also quite youthfully reticent at this stage, unwinding in the glass with a lovely bouquet of raspberries, dark chocolate, candied peel and rose petal. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with considerable amplitude and dimension, its fine but chewy structuring tannins largely concealed by a vibrant core of fruit.

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Village has a beautifully defined bouquet with red cherries, raspberry and light briary scents with wonderful mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, very focused and smooth, great transparency here with a touch of piquancy on the finish. This is a sublime Village Cru.

Vinous (90-92)

(100% vendange entier; tasted from tank): Dark red with ruby tones. Deeper on the nose than the village Vosne, if not iniitially offering the same éclat of that wine; dark berry aromas are complicated by emerging notes of licorice, violet and mint. Plush and broad but quite airy and dry, offering an intriguing combination of thick texture and crunchy fruit. Plenty of stuffing for its ripe tannins. Displays a mineral quality on the spreading, glistening finish. The pH here is a rather high 3.77 but this wine does not lack for energy.

Deep red. Smoky red and black fruit aromas are complicated by licorice and minerals. Highly concentrated, sweet and deep, with a medicinal quality to its black fruit flavors. A wonderfully seamless wine with terrific pinot sap. Finishes with superb ripe, spreading tannins. Widespread millerandage here has yielded a wine with terrific volume, but there's nothing heavy about it.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Village has a complex bouquet with brambly red fruit, smoke and a slight peatiness that develops with time. The palate is sappy on the entry with fine but firm tannin. There is impressive fruit concentration here with a grippy and quite masculine finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle. Excellent.

Vinous (91)

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Village has the most fruit on the nose compared to the Village Crus from Nuits Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, pure dark cherries, raspberry and crushed stone scents, just a touch of wild mint emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite sweet with crunchy red fruit towards the finish. Palpable energy here, this is well worth seeking out.
