Fragrant and delicious, this opens with aromas of ripe black-skinned fruit, blue flower, leather, underbrush and a whiff of French oak. The full-bodied, enveloping palate delivers baked plum, Marasca cherry, licorice and a note of espresso framed in fine-grained enveloping tannins that give it a smooth texture and a weightless finesse.

The 2017 Chianti Classico Fontodi is a wine of extreme elegance that shows how much the house style has evolved here. A decade ago, in a warm year the Fontodi Chianti Classico would have been opulent, but these days proprietor Giovanni Manetti seeks finesse more than power, and that is exactly what comes through here. Ripe red Sangiovese fruit, rose petal, blood orange and spice infuse this racy, exotic Chianti Classico with so much character. The 2017 spent two years in oak, half in cask and half in neutral oak. I loved it.

April's frost resulted in less productive vines. Giovanni Manetti saw this as an advantage in the drought-like conditions of summer. He explains that with fewer grapes, the vines suffered less stress and were able to continue ripening without shutting down. Initial scents of baked clay and dry earth make way for mint blossom and cherry. Clingy, muscular tannins wrap around dusty fruit with nuances of rust and cinnamon poking through and the acidity is remarkably racy and ripe.

Lustrous mid crimson. Gorgeous lifted nose of sour cherry with a hint of nutmeg. Succulent and almost a little tart on the palate with a layer of powdery tannins. Amazingly fresh for this hot vintage. I presume part of the fruit was harvested very early in order to maintain the acidity.

Fontodi has been in the Manetti family since the 1960's after they grew tired of the role they had held for centuries prior; producing the iconic terracotta tiles which adorn the roofs of wineries and homes throughout Tuscany. Pursuing a policy of meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship, the estate has become one of the most well-known names in Tuscany and for good reason. Producing some of the regions finest example of Chianti Classico alongside the iconic Super Tuscan, Flaccianello della Pieve, Fontodi is an essential player in Italian wine.
