This is amazing. The vibrancy and energy in this wine is stunning. The complexity of aromas are breathtaking with flowers, blackcurrants, raspberries and peaches. Full-bodied, yet ever so refined and polished with impeccable texture and beauty. The length is marvelous. This is a testimony to balance, harmony and transparency in a great red. Drink after 2023.

2018 is rightly regarded as one of the best Chilean red wine vintages of the last 30 years, so it’s no surprise that the latest release of Don Melchor is so special. Made from 181 lots covering 151 different vineyard parcels, it’s a pure, refined expression of the Andes-cooled Puente Alto terroir. This is only the second time that the blend has included all four Bordeaux varieties on the estate – it’s 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot – and the wine is suitably nuanced and well balanced. Scented and floral, with some wild herb top notes, it’s an icon that marries energy with power and grip. The tannins are polished, the fruit intense, with cassis and red berry flavours complemented by fresh acidity and scented coffee bean oak.

Winemaker Enrique Tirado, who lives and breathes Don Melchor, is very enthusiastic about this vintage, a stellar one for Chile.
Deep crimson although I can see the bottom of the glass! Freshness with ripe-but-not-sweet fruit and some hint of stoniness on the quite strongly aromatic nose. Then it is sweeter on the palate than it had seemed on the nose. Intense cassis, unsweetened chocolate, and then a fresh finish with a nice, dry mineral finish. Really quite appetising. Beautifully polished tannins which, amazingly, make the wine delicious to drink already. The undertow and clean peacock's tail finish is impressive. Despite its current approachability, on the basis of this vertical tasting I forecast a pretty impressively long life.

Don Melchor is simply "the benchmark for Chilean wine", according to Wine Advocate. The estate produces the most consistently highly-rated Cabernet Sauvignon in the world. Decanter has drawn a direct parallel between the quality of Don Melchor and the best Cabernet Sauvignon terroirs of the world, asserting that Don Melchor “stands next to the best wines in the world based on Cabernet Sauvignon, including those of Bordeaux and the Napa Valley” (Decanter). The Don Melchor vineyard sits 650 metres above sea level on an ancient alluvial terrace left by retreating Andean glaciers. It is planted 90% with Cabernet Sauvignon (30+ years vines), which find an ideal terroir between the rocky soils and cooling breezes blowing down from the Andes. We were thrilled for the Don Melchor team when we learned that James Suckling had scored the 2018 wine a perfect 100 points (for the first time), after the 99 points received by the 2017 vintage.
