    Wine Advocate (88)

Extremely severe and hard, with an overwhelming scent of damp, dirty earth and herbs, this austere, fruitless style of claret may last another 50 years, but it is hollow and charmless. Interestingly, the spectacular 1976 is a candidate for the wine of the vintage.

    Vinous - Neal Martin (91)

The 2001 Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse is a little cleaner and more defined on the nose compared to the 2000, offering brambly red fruit, ferrous notes and hints of wild mushroom, quite perfumed though not complex. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly more density and grip compared to the 2000. Soothing and earthy toward the finish, which tapers a little.

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95)

The 2005 Canon is all brawn and muscle. Chunky tannins give the 2005 a decidedly virile feel. There is plenty of depth and freshness - this is after all one of the very best sites in all of Bordeaux - so the 2005 will hold for many years to come. Dark fruit, leather, smoke, gravel, crushed rocks and spice linger on the potent finish. Tasting the 2005 today really highlights how far Canon has come in recent years

Richly-textured, sensuous and silky, the wine opens with flowers, licorice, plums, spice box, roasted nuts and black, red and blue fruits. Opulent, fresh, long and velvety, the wine is refined, complex and concentrated. The fruit coats your palate, yet retains its freshness, lift, elegance and purity. The over 50 second finish leaves you with layers of vibrant, black and red fruits, savory herbs, minerality and spicy cocoa. This remains one of the new stars of St. Emilion and is a wine to follow before prices jump. The wine blends 84% Merlot with 16% Cabernet Franc, 14.8% ABV, pH 3.52.

Le Pin Pomerol Trilogie L13.14.15 NV (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (91)

The NV Trilogie was a fantastic wine, a blend of three vintages of declassified fruit from Le Pin. There are two or three different blends, this one comprising 2013, 2014 and 2015. Again, served blind, I stupidly guessed Saint-Émilion! I know that Jacques Thienpont and Fiona Morrison dislike the speculation that shrouds Trilogie due to its connection. Affordability was their original intention, but you cannot fight market forces and the truth is that this is a delicious, surprisingly complex multi-vintage blend. As one of the only people that ever tasted the declassified 2013 Le Pin, serving as a guinea pig for Jacques on one visit, I can vouchsafe that he made far better use of the fruit that year.

    Wine Advocate (94)

This is a slight upgrade for this wine, which seems to be approaching full maturity but is in no danger of losing fruit or declining for at least another 10 years. It is one of the most elegant wines of the vintage, with an ethereal nose of red and blue fruits, spring flowers, and hints of bay leaf and graphite, while unsmoked cigar tobacco and plum also make an appearance in the strikingly complex aromatics and flavors. The wine is medium-bodied, not a blockbuster by any means, but a wine of terrific balance, purity, symmetry, and style. Drink it over the next 20 years.

    Montrose 1979 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (87)

Tasted at the Montrose vertical in London, previous encounters with the 1979 Montrose have been a rum experience. Like the 1978, however, this was better. It was picked between 29 September and 14 October after a rather cloudy month. Certainly it shows its age with wide bricking on the rim. The nose is leathery and rather dour, although I noticed a touch of mint developing in the glass among dusty tertiary aromas. The palate is medium-bodied without the same cohesion as the 1978. However, the bottle was undeniably fresh with red rather than black fruit, a fine seem of acidity and a simple, pastille-like finish. The 1979 is not going to get any better, so pop the cork sooner rather than later if you have any bottles. Tasted June 2016.

    Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (100)

Right from the first nose, you start salivating in anticipation. Has the exact right amount of sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, the tug of tannins that are confident and perfectly placed, ready to soften soon, but not quite yet. Velvet texture, with turmeric, black chocolate and violet notes, crushed mint on the finish. You know is going to last decades, and is a bottle that falls bang into that rare category of age-defying wines. The definition and the structure of this is right at the top of what Montrose can deliver. Harvest September 23 to October 14.

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)

Lemon peel, white flowers, mint and slate are some of the many notes that are woven throughout the 2014 Pavillon Blanc. The interplay of bright, citrus-driven flavors and palate texture is compelling. This is the first vintage in which a portion of the Blanc was aged in 500-liter barrels, a format that helps preserve freshness and tension. In early 2015, I thought the Pavillon Blanc could be the most compelling of Margaux's 2014s. I still feel the same way.

One of the stars of the vintage, the 2011 Vieux Château Certan was brilliant from barrel (I vividly remember tasting it as a student), and it is beginning to show all of that potential in bottle. Wafting from the glass with inviting aromas of mulberries, cherries, vine smoke, bitter chocolate, violets and spices, framed by a deft application of classy new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with terrific concentration, powdery tannins and a long, sapid finish. Even better, this terrific wine remains notably undervalued in the market today.

Vieux Chateau Saint Andre 2015 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2015 Vieux Château Saint André is the estate of upcoming winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet (look out for him...I think he has a bright future). This has a sense of brightness on the nose, with vivid black cherry, cassis and blueberry fruit, very poised and focused. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin. There is real backbone here, a lovely graphite seam and though the finish is a little abrupt, it should fill out by the time of bottling. If you cannot afford Petrus this year and still need a bit of Berrouet in your wine, then this is a perfect place to start.
