Burgundy 2021 En Primeur
Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.
Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.
Careful selection is required for this vintage, and our buying team is pleased to provide more details and insider tips after a fruitful tasting week at Burgundy. Stay closely with us on this exciting campaign!

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95)Only down 40% thanks to general protection. Delicious pale lemon colour with a few green reflexes. Power in a chiselled rather than a fat style. Huge opulence on the palate, luxurious white fruit, ripe pears, not going as far as peach, and still managing a certain elegance. All in place here. A long and ripely scented finish. All one would hope for. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted: November 2022 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87)Mid lemon yellow. A faint reduction, quite floral with some firmer fruit beneath. The 2021 Bourgogne Blanc lacks the generosity of recent vintages though that may be a good thing depending on your palate. A little lick of oak, and medium length. Drink from 2024-2026. Tasted: November 2022 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88)The only Montagny cuvée in 2021. A light nose, a little bit chiselled. Light to medium weight, the oak a little more present than the concentration of fruit. Agreeable, to drink up relatively early. This weighs in at 13.5%. Drink from 2024-2026. Tasted: November 2022 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)82% down in production I am told, meaning just 1 x 350 litre barrel, a new one. Pale lemon with a light green tint. Quite a concentration on the bouquet, fruit and oak integrated. Excellent tension behind, the fruit being concentrated enough to stand up to the oak, and the finish shows significant promise. This will come out well – if you can find any! Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: November 2022 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)Pale lemon and lime. There is a graceful volume of fruit on the nose, consistent with the vintage. Nothing forced and while the volume of fruit is less than in recent vintages, the style is fine and the length is there. Just a little flesh alongside the oak at the finish, though the wood gives a lightly biscuity touch. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: November 2022 |
