Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)A bright fresh mid purple. The bouquet is superb, in a really lush and almost creamy red berry fruit, not as wild as some until a little savoury touch at the finish. Complex, a fine weave to the texture, with pure red berry fruit coming out at the finish. Despite its location I tend to think of Bonnes Mares as a Morey style Grand Cru, but you can certainly see the touch of Chambolle in this. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burghound (91-94)A discreet application of wood sets off the softly spicy and earthy aromas of violet, lavender plum and red currant. The powerful and markedly more concentrated broad-shouldered flavors exude a subtle minerality on the succulent yet very firmly structured finale that exhibits excellent length. Patience will be necessary but it should be well-rewarded in time as this is packed with development potential. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru has a classic Morey-Saint-Denis bouquet with mineral-driven black fruit and touches of melted tar and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-balanced and grippy, with perhaps the most saline finish amongst Arlaud's Morey Premier Crus. This will need more time than the Aux Chesaux, but it will be worth the wait. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-91)A pretty mid ruby colour. Fresh raspberry, very sensual up front, firmer tannins behind, but the fruit covers them nicely. Linear in style, good acidity, and with a more complex crunch to the fruit at the back. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)Grown in the red soil sector. Their vines in the upper part, on white soil, are still too young to include. Mid crimson red. Plenty of whole bunches on the nose, so I love it, along with the slightly wilder aspect typical of Bonnes Mares. Very complete with a beautiful ripe round dark red fruit suffusing the middle of the palate, and very good acidity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)Not in bottle. Medium to bright purple. 50% whole bunch makes a more classic pinot fruit on the nose. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)(5 Star Wine) First we tasted the component parts. (1) Young vines from 1980s. A deep concentrated purple. Lesser foliage in the hot dry summer has concentrated the colour and other aspects, giving a dark style of fruit as well, with a nutty finish, but good acidity. (2) A blend, mainly from plot #3 and a bit of #1. Mid purple in colour, less demonstrative on the nose. A much suppler style of fruit, less forceful acidity, fine length, more typical Epenots here. (3) Old vines, 90+ years old: A deep glowing purple. A little more intensity, a gorgeous quality of deep red fruit, just a touch tougher in its tannins, plus the acidity. (4) Press wine: dark purple, powerful rather than fine on the nose, more volatile, but could be useful in the blend. Sweet thick dark red to black fruit. Chunky stuff. And now the blend: A deep purple colour with only a very slightly lighter rim. The bouquet suggests poise as the fruit has melded together harmoniously. On the palate this is, as almost always, a much more complete wine than the individual parts. The wine seems to push down deeper while retaining all the class of the very best components. We are approaching the cusp of red and black fruit, the acidity is perfectly harnessed and the tannins are fine grained. Potentially a very fine Clos des Epeneaux. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97)In bottle. Made as three cuvees, then assembled. A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Irreproachable. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-93)An additional fresh purple density. Rich purple, with a depth of fruit to match. Quite special. I love the balance of this in the mouth, a dense and quite exuberant red fruit, brought back at the finish to the typical savoury style of Morey, long and fine. Darker fruit at the finish. Drink from 2028-2035. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)From the usual four vineyards. Deep crimson. The bouquet has quite an elegant style even if the individual fruits are not yet quite with us. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Glowing purple. There is a fine weight of fruit, building steadily, lifting deep cherry notes, with an excellent texture, serge not silk, but it provides a fine backbone. I can see this ageing into a classic Dujac village Morey, always one of Burgundy’s great village wines. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)80 year old vines in clay soil, a vineyard run by the Delaunay team. Destemmed 36% new wood, all destemmed. Dark crimson purple. The Chaponnières has a lovely bouquet of dense ripe cherries and a good fruit acid balance, I find this wine altogether livelier and more interesting than the Beaune Grèves. Drink from 2028-2035. The wood gives an extra dimension which will need to integrate but the essential joyous nature of this hillside vineyard shines through. Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Sorbé 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with more floral tones than the Les Millandes, wilted violets infusing the black and red fruit, fine mineralité coming from the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite fresh and saline, with a cohesive, very "controlled" finish that lends this wine verticality. Very sapid. Give this 3-4 years in bottle. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru is a tiny production matured each year in a single, tailor-made "Aphrodite" barrel from the Cavin cooperage. This vintage is just 400 liters. Because of the very light toasting, the new oak does not impede the aromatics: brambly red berry fruit and fish scale touches. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, sweet and slightly candied opening, offering blood orange-laced fleshy red fruit, with vanilla towards the finish. It is very seductive, and despite the new oak, the structure suggests this will be more approachable than Legros's other cuvées. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru comes from two parcels, one planted north-south and the other east-west. Its attractive bouquet offers brambly red berry fruit, forest floor and light black truffle scents. There is good complexity here; it is very composed. The palate is well-balanced, with good depth and gentle grip. There is mainly black fruit here with plenty of freshness and mineralité. The finish has commendable precision and feels long and tender. Excellent. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)30% new wood, including one 400 litre barrel, which is the way Jean-Pierre will go in future for the first year, and then earthenware jars for the second elevage. A touch of liquorice. This has a much denser texture than used to be the case, and a superb fruit acid balance. Extremely impressive for village Morey blanc. A wine which will develop in time. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comprises two barrels, one new and one a year old. It has quite a backward nose, more tertiary in style, quite flinty, in fact. Blind, I would not guess this to be from this vineyard at all. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and boysenberry fruit, fine mineralité and backbone. This is much more open, fanning out with style towards the finish that has just the right amount of edge. It's very fine but will require bottle age to unlock the aromatics. |

Wine Advocate (93-94)The 2022 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is excellent, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums and raspberries mingled with exotic spices, orange zest and petals.
