Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92) The 2022 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru is very ripe and almost ostentatious on the nose with its plush red plum and fresh figgy scents. Maybe just a little over-ripe? The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, saturated tannins. This is a "big" Volnay, with plenty of "rondeur" with a welcome pinch of cracked black pepper enlivening the finish. If you're not bothered about elegance, this may suit you, though I might err toward the excellent 2021. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98) A bright fresh mid purple. The bouquet is superb, in a really lush and almost creamy red berry fruit, not as wild as some until a little savoury touch at the finish. Complex, a fine weave to the texture, with pure red berry fruit coming out at the finish. Despite its location I tend to think of Bonnes Mares as a Morey style Grand Cru, but you can certainly see the touch of Chambolle in this. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94) Two thirds whole bunch and just 12.5% here. A lovely vibrant purple, full of energy. There is a sublime elegance to this on the nose, then a rather earthier dark fruit and a few tannins behind. One can see the suggestion of grand cru in the terroir of Caillerets compared to most other Volnay 1ers Crus. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92) Fresh mid purple. This also has a fresher quality to the fruit, lively strawberry, I thought of some whole bunches but they were not used. Perhaps not quite the length here of the best in the stable. A little austerity at the back within the context of this vintage. 13.2% alcohol. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Plenty of whole bunches on the nose, so I love it, along with the slightly wilder aspect typical of Bonnes Mares. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93) A small yield in 2022, making it hard to judge the picking date. A rich deep purple in the centre. The oak adds a sheen to the nose. There is vigour to this albeit with a slightly riper fruit profile, but the structure is balanced very well by a fresher limestone feel. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Mid crimson, attractively perfumed, just a bit sweaty, concentrated raspberry with some strawberry, good acidity. 100% whole bunch gives the style. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93) Six barrels, two of them new. A medium to bright purple. The nose is invigorating with as little as 10% whole bunches, enough to add a floral note. This is lively on the palate, a Fremiets which has remembered it is in Volnay, not Pommard, delightfully stylish at the finish. Drink from 2032-2037. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92) A rich deep purple. the nose too is luxurious, with a touch of coconut as well. Totally fills the mouth but there is just a little more precision than the Chorey. The fruit and the coconut make me think of Lamingtons. As long as the coconut dies down this will be pretty impressive. Drink from 2025-2030. Tasted: November 2022. More Info
