Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru is showing a little more oak than other cuvées, though it marries well with the fruit, touches of menthol percolating through with time, quite lively and precocious. The palate is well-balanced and quite intense on the entry, with orange rind and subtle peachy notes. It builds nicely in the glass and fans out with a sense of brio on the finish. This will be difficult to resist when young. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)5 Star Wine. A glowing mid crimson purple. The bouquet is enchanting with the white pepper and rose petal lift from the whole bunches, a little under half. Perfectly judged ripeness. The wine is beautifully discreet on the palate, but it is all there. Not super concentrated but detailed, precise and entirely in balance. Note: one of the ways in which Cyprien ensures a first class result with his Clos de la Roche is by marking up underperforming vines and deselecting their fruit at the picking stage. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Mid lemon yellow. There is a little more generosity of fruit on the nose, this is properly ripe though it came in at 12.5%. It does not need any more. A little bacon fat reduction, perfectly balanced through the middle, enough acidity but not trenchant. More nuanced than Referts, on its way to becoming a very fine wine. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Not yet racked so this fine Clos de la Roche will gain in purity what it already has in density. A splendid long rich finish, high class fruit throughout. A little more body than the Clos St-Denis. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2022 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru has a more backward bouquet than the Les Charmes-Dessus, gaining intensity all the time in the glass. The well-balanced palate has a slightly creamy texture, harmonious with grilled hazelnut and almond. There’s a touch of vanilla pod towards the finish from the oak that will be subsumed with time. Very fine. |

The most reserved nose of these three (Bouchères, Porusots, Gouttes d’Or), with a well-rounded fruit on the palate, then ripe apple with a touch of plum on the palate. Greater depth of fruit on the palate, something of a dried fruit character according to Frédéric Weber. The aforementioned trio differ in style but are very hard to separate in quality.
