Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)Just as deep a purple colour but more elegance on the nose, less obviously and immediately sumptuous. Wavelets of alpine strawberry and its raspberry equivalent dance across the palate, super fine, with startling elegance. Another 2022 beauty from Thomas. Drink from 2030-2038. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-93)An additional fresh purple density. Rich purple, with a depth of fruit to match. Quite special. I love the balance of this in the mouth, a dense and quite exuberant red fruit, brought back at the finish to the typical savoury style of Morey, long and fine. Darker fruit at the finish. Drink from 2028-2035. |

Immerse yourself in the sheer elegance of the Cyprien Arlaud Bourgogne Oka 2022. This distinctive, world-class wine hails from the eminent Côte de Nuits in Bourgogne, France, impeccably crafted by Cyprien Arlaud. The Arlaud family, renowned for their commitment to bio-dynamic winemaking, craft this exquisite wine. Biens Faîtes and Chabiots vineyards, using horse-drawn ploughing, contribute to the unique flavours. This gem in the realm of Pinot Noir exudes radiant purity and balance. The Cyprien Arlaud Bourgogne Oka 2022 undergoes minimal intervention during production to honour the varietal's character. Great care is applied during the thermo-regulated fermentation process which happens in wood vats, followed by 12 months of ageing in barrels. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)From the upper part of Les Treux. Glowing purple. The nose is discreet. The palate does the Echezeaux latticework thing with lots of detail, and exceptional length. Goes on dancing, tiptoeing, across the palate for a long time. Just one barrel. The fruit stays with me. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)A fascinating plot worked by horse and hand, as they cannot get access with the tractor. Super sensual yet with total finesse, a depth of fruit, a feeling of royalty in the quality, a little touch of quality pepper at the finish but it is evidently the vineyard speaking. Still needs to harmonise further, but this is very fine. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has a taut, focused bouquet of black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with a slight flintiness in the background. Very fine delineation here. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated opening, fleshy and vibrant with blood orange-infused blueberry and raspberry fruit, then quite strict and peppery towards the finish. This represents a sterling follow-up to the impressive 2021 last year. |

Vinous (86-88)The 2022 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge has a relatively light but fresh bouquet with slightly darker fruit than other Hautes-Côtes I tasted. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and fine body, given its class, with a confit-like finish. This should be delicious. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)From half a dozen plots. A bright and attractive fresh purple. Lively cherries and fresh raspberries on the nose. Slightly more solid than I expected on the palate, with still a dry tannin or two, pretty red fruit, medium length. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)Rich dense purple. Gorgeously attractive if a little more restrained than the Clos St-Denis. Some of the traditional blueberry. So much in reserve. I prefer the weave of the texture here especially if keeping for the longer term. On the cusp of red and black fruit at the finish, and with excellent persistence. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)From the usual four vineyards. Deep crimson. The bouquet has quite an elegant style even if the individual fruits are not yet quite with us. Quite a firm structure behind but sitting well with the deep red fruit. Balanced and stylish, with good ageing potential. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Glowing purple. There is a fine weight of fruit, building steadily, lifting deep cherry notes, with an excellent texture, serge not silk, but it provides a fine backbone. I can see this ageing into a classic Dujac village Morey, always one of Burgundy’s great village wines. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)A rich intense purple. The bouquet has the enhanced heady qualities I associate with Malconsorts. Some peonies perhaps, then a lush but stable fruit across the palate, with a wealth behind, which does indeed cover the tannins. Persistent. This Malconsorts is a firmly constructed wine with stable tannins, also the flesh to cover them. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |
