Boschkloof Sons of Sugarland Syrah 2017 (6x75cl)
The 2017 Sons of Sugarland is pure Syrah from a single clone, 100% whole-bunch-matured in used oak for 12 to 14 months. It has a nuanced bouquet of brambly red berry fruit, crushed flint, white pepper and hints of fennel; the whole bunches lend real complexity. The fine, poised palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and well-judged acidity, offering wonderful purity and varietal expression toward the complex, Provençal-tinged finish. Wow. This is some of the finest Syrah I have tasted from the Cape. Just 2,000 bottles produced - try to grab one.

Boschkloof is one of the prime protagonists in the rejuvenation of South African wine as a distinct and unique country with it's own, thrilling identity. Winemaker Reenan Borman has been taking the winery to new heights since taking over in 2010. In his own words, "with a hands-off approach the wine really showcases its origin. As a winemaker it really is an honour to be working with this fruit." The approach is already paying dividends as his personal project, Patatsfontein Chenin Blanc, has been lauded by Christian Eedes as "being utterly true to the variety but also giving you the sense that it could come from nowhere else in the world."
