Despite the low yields and all the difficulties of the start of the Covid, 2020 will be remembered as an excellent vintage in Swartland and this release in particular is declared by Neal Martin to be 'one of the best Syrahs that I have tasted from Boekenhoutskloof in a while'. Despite the preconceptions that some people may have have about South African wine, this is far from a blockbuster Syrah and instead is instead a 'subtle, layered wine' (TA) all about subtle intensity. The palate is 'sappy and beautifully balanced', that builds towards a 'voluminous, almost Côte-Rôtie-like finish' (NM).
90% of the fruit in this cuvée comes from the legendary Porseleinberg vineyard, where Callie Louw's eponymous Porseleinberg is sourced. Porseleinberg is one of South Africa's most in demand and first investment grade wines that caused a stampede in the 2018 vintage after Atkin gave it a perfect 100 points, which at the time was only his third 100 point score given to any wine in his 30 year career. Boekenhoutskloof's Syrah can be argued to be Porseleinberg in all but price.
The 2020 Syrah is a 90/10 cuvée of grapes from the Porseleinberg and Goldmine properties and is another triumphant release from Marc Kent and Gottfried Mocke. Far from being a blockbuster, this is a subtle, layered wine, with aromas of violet and five-spice, subtle 60% whole bunches and flavours of bramble, blackberry and goji berry. Silky, scented and deftly oaked.

The 2020 Syrah Boekenhoutskloof is the first vintage under 14% alcohol. It utilizes 60% whole bunches with natural ferment in concrete vats and aged for 18 months mainly in Stockinger foudres. It has a cool but focused bouquet that gains intensity with aeration: blackcurrants, bilberry, pressed iris flower and a pinch of Provençal herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, sappy and beautifully balanced, gently building towards a voluminous, almost Côte-Rôtie-like finish. One of the best Syrahs that I have tasted from Boekenhoutskloof in a while.
