Rioja has three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. Beronia is located in Ollauri, in the heart of Rioja Alta (the highest elevation of the three areas). Rioja Alta is influenced by both the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and has a mix of clay and chalky soils. During the 3rd Century BC this region was inhabited by the ‘berones’, a Celtic tribe who called the area ‘Beronia’. The winery was founded in 1973 by a group of friends from the Basque country and the winery was acquired by Gonzalez Byass in 1982. The role of oak is key to the Beronia style, and the team constantly experiment with different types, leading to Beronia’s pioneering development of mixed barrels; produced from American oak staves and French oak tops. Consistently receiving awards from the most important international competitions, Beronia is today one of the top five Rioja wineries in Spain.
