Rich plum colour. This takes its time to open, is pretty subtle at first, but then explodes in juicy fruit. Clear salinity where you can feel the slate scrape of the limestone terroir, alongside well expressed aromatics with touches of peony flowers. Elegant and succulent. Second vintage with Jean de Cournuaud as technical director. A yield of 46hl/ha. 65% new oak, with a mix of barrels and 20hl casks. 3.77pH. Harvest 18-21 September, with all the Merlots in 3.5 days instead of the usual 11 days (and in fact stretched over one month in 2018), with just 20 minutes from picking to vat. Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is considered a savvy en primeur buy. It bridges the divide in Saint-Émilion between the value-oriented Grands Crus and the high-flying aristocrats of the region. A 1er Grand Cru Classé 'B', Beau-Séjour Bécot is classified on par with Canon and Figeac, yet far less expensive than either. As a result, it often flies under the radar. Over the past few years, however, it has made great strides, gaining ground on its illustrious neighbours. The 20 hectare vineyard is roughly 73% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines average 45 years of age, but with some parcels over 70 years old. The estate is located on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion with a terroir of clay that has deep, limestone soils. Below the surface there is an endless array of limestone tunnels and quarries, which definitely contributes to making the wine so special.
