With an impeccable sense of balance, the Akitu A1 Pinot Noir 2013, produced by Akitu winery in the illustrious Central Otago region of New Zealand, manifests the exceptional terroir of its home ground. This vintage is derived from handpicked, hand sorted, and de-stemmed grapes, set apart by its compelling complexity and expressive dark fruit notes. The wine’s ageing in French oak barrels for 16 months only accentuates its wraparound texture, harmonising ever so elegantly with the layers of ripe red and black cherry, entwined with hushed whispers of lavender and earthy undertones. Esteemed winegrower Andrew Donaldson's philosophy shines through - letting the vineyard express itself. Akitu A1 Pinot Noir 2013 brings to the fore the qualities of its specific clone mix and the unique sub-alpine climate it thrives in, culminating in a wine that's ethereal yet deeply rooted. Templating fine wine, it truly captures the essence and precision of world-class Pinot Noir. |

Pretty, aromatic red fruits with the freshness of stem influence but without being overtly stemmy – the freshness and structure of stems but no greenness. Vinous (94)Saturated ruby. Displays an array of spice-accented black and blue fruit and floral scents, along with suggestions of coconut, pipe tobacco and woodsmoke. Broad and fleshy on entry, offering appealingly sweet cherry liqueur, cassis, bitter chocolate and exotic spice flavors that firm up steadily through the back half. Shows fine definition and spicy cut on a long, smoke- and floral- driven finish. |

James Suckling (97)A blend of 57% cabernet sauvignon and 43% shiraz, this has a very impressively complete feel, a hallmark of the 2018 vintage wines, and there’s a myriad of characters with cabernet’s cedary and gently herbal notes sitting atop a core of rich red-plum and dark-berry shiraz fruit aromas. So integrated. The palate has a very silky texture, so plush and polished with a wealth of rich and intense dark-plum, dark-berry and blackcurrant flavors. The oak is completely soaked with ripe, fresh fruit. This is a great Bin 389. Drink over the next two decades. Screw cap. |

Decanter (95)With its seamless textural slide across the palate, this is a superb example of what is considered a distinctly Australian blend, showing both generosity and serious intent. A magnificent full nose leads to a lively dance of red plums over blue and black fruits, although the strong acid spine results in a rather sharp finish. Time in the cellar will reveal more integrated harmony between the essential elements. Released at AU$100. |

Bob Campbell MW (97)Seresin’s flagship pinot noir deserves its exalted status. It offers a seductive sweet and silken first impression revealing a structure of ripe, sappy tannins on its lingering finish. Layers of ripe fruit interspersed with subtle floral and herb characters demonstrate real complexity. Approachable now, this wine deserves at least another 4-5 years careful cellaring to reveal its true colours. 2/3/2017 Drink 2017 to 2024 |
