Made from a blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Syrah and 7% Petit Verdot, this 2017 vintage is 'riding the line between the New World and Old World expressions' (WA) in style with Neal Martin going as far to say this is an "almost Napa-like Anwilka" because of how seductive it is. The aromatics are "alluring", but it is the palate, with its "fabulous elegance and finesse" (GS), where it wows.
Taking advantage of their prime location in Helderberg, just under 5 miles from the sea, its cooling influences create "fresh glossy acidity that keeps the finish focused, vibrant and bright" (GS). With a drinking window up to 2040, this will outlive Bordeaux offerings that cost five times the price.
A blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Syrah and 7% Petit Verdot which was aged for 19 months in French oak, 50% new 400 litre barrels and 50% second fill. A seductively perfumed vintage, the aromatics show alluring notes of violets, potpourri and hits of lily over dark bramble berry fruits with hints of mocha espresso notes that combine with subtle buttered brown toast nuances. The palate shows fabulous elegance and finesse with a soft touch concentration of black currant, Christmas pudding, savoury plum compote and black cherry. The tannins are powdery and fine grained but also structured and drying, combining well with a fresh glossy acidity that keeps the finish focused, vibrant and bright. An impressive wine that not only shows off another great vintage in the Cape but also what is increasingly possible with the superb Anwilka Stellenbosch terroir.

A pleasantly fresh nose of red and black fruit, red licorice and tobacco leaf. Full-bodied with silky, rounded tannins. Succulent and expressive on the palate, with lovely freshness and drive. Transparent and clear through the very long, persistent finish. Delicious. Drink or hold.

Concentrated cassis and damson fruits, bitter black chocolate that is set against tight tannins, all softened by toasted oak cedar and fresh elderflower and redcurrant acidities. This is built to last, and even at four years old I would suggest leaving another year or two. An excellent vintage in Stellenbosch with a warm summer and long, cool ripening during harvest, and there are plenty of subtle layers of flavour here. 3.6ph. 50% new oak and 50% one year old French barrels, all 400l in size.

Anwilka is the sister property to Klein Constantia, part-owned by Hubert de Boüard (co-owner of Bordeaux’s Château Angélus) and Bruno Prats (ex-Cos d’Estournel). This is a plush, full-bodied blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah with 7% Petit Verdot, which wears its 19 months in 50% new French oak well, thanks to the intensity of fruit. Dark bramble and mulled wine spice aromas, an inky-smooth liquorice palate, velvety tannins and balancing acidity.

Riding the line between the New World and Old World expressions, the 2017 Anwilka begins with aromas of dusty blackberry, ripe plum, cedar and cigar spice before notions of graphite, sage and wet river rocks waft from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, it has a ripe yet rustic mouthfeel, energetic acidity and fine-grained tannins that lift the mid-palate. As the wine sits in the mouth, it continues to somersault and reveal its elegance and complexity over the persistent and elongated finish. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot rested for 19 months in French oak, of which 50% were first fill. It's drinking great now, but just give it one more year in the bottle and drink through the middle of the next decade.

The 2017 Anwilka was aged for 19 months in 50% new oak (400-liter barrels) and the rest in second-fill. It has a pure, seductive bouquet of boysenberry and cassis fruit, the vanilla-y oak seamlessly integrated and not imposing itself like older vintages of Anwilka. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, and slightly granular in texture, presenting layered black fruit laced with tobacco, allspice and touches of cassis. Very seductive on the finish. This is an almost Napa-like Anwilka that requires 3–4 years in barrel.
