I have consumed several bottles of the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill. One of the most awesome young reds I have ever tasted, it possesses a black/purple color, a seamless texture, and freakishly high levels of intensity (cassis, black and blueberries infused with espresso, chocolate, and licorice) that are flawlessly presented in a full-bodied, massive yet elegant wine. Nothing is out of balance in this explosively rich, thick, highly-extracted Cabernet. A compelling, historic Cabernet Sauvignon, it will drink well for 30-35 years.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is magnificent. Crème de cassis, graphite, lavender, licorice, espresso and sage infuse the 2018 with striking depth. The tannins are intense, but there is more than enough mid-palate intensity to keep everything in balance. Inky, deep and potent, the 2018 Bryant Estate is off the charts. It is one of the very finest wines I have ever tasted here.

Ripe cherries, plums and flowers on the nose. Orange peel, too, together with hints of thyme, bay leaf and sage. Medium-to full-bodied, incredibly deep and fresh, with fine tannins that carry you deep down into the finish. It tells you its great, but makes you spend time in order to understand it. Wine Advocate (100)

As I predicted last year, the 2013 Harlan Estate is one of their all-time greats, although they have had many of them, starting with the 1991, followed by 1994, 1995, 1997 (although controversial in some circles), 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2012. This great first-growth property, with aspirations to produce the finest Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine made in the New World, has given us a wine that has it all in 2013. Dense purple to the rim, with notes of espresso, white chocolate, mocha, blackberry, cassis, and cedar wood, the wine is full-bodied, opulent, but also structured, pure and incredibly long (well past a minute aftertaste). It is probably closest in personality and overall character to the compelling 2001, which is still a youthful wine at age 15. Drink it over the next 50+ years.

(15.5% alcohol): Saturated bright red-ruby. Medicinal black cherry, blackberry, cocoa powder, tobacco, menthol and minerals on the remarkably primary nose. Seriously powerful, superconcentrated wine with a tightly coiled spring and a magically light touch. The dark berry and mineral flavors are complicated by a saline element. Conveys an impression of excellent acidity, but Woodbridge notes that the pH here is around 4.0; still, this wine makes the 2004 seem truffley by comparison. Finishes with a suave dusting of tannins and outstanding length. This was made in oak fermenters at Woodbridge's new winery, then aged in his caves. I'd still give it several years in the cellar to resolve its acids and tannins. It may yet merit an even higher score.

Although much lighter than the two top vintages of 1991 and 1992, it is a medium-bodied, soft, fully mature red exhibiting notes of Asian spices, licorice, red and black currants, and forest floor, and sweet tannin in the finish. Bright medium ruby. Alluring aromas of dark berries, licorice, lavender and violet. Wonderfully dense, spicy wine with an exhilarating sugar/acid balance giving definition to its dark berry, mineral and floral flavors. Offers outstanding thickness and depth of texture without any undue weight. Really echoes and rises on the long back end, with the noble tannins thoroughly integrated with the wine's fruit. This makes the Roberta's seem a bit ungiving, but I suspect that that wine will yet gain in pliancy. One of the handful of superstars of its vintage, from fruit picked between October 14 and 17, or almost a full month later than the Roberta's Merlot (September 18).

Vinous (95+)

Wine Advocate (90)

Although much lighter than the two top vintages of 1991 and 1992, it is a medium-bodied, soft, fully mature red exhibiting notes of Asian spices, licorice, red and black currants, and forest floor, and sweet tannin in the finish. While not likely to improve, it is capable of holding for another 5-10 years.

Vinous (96)

(14.5% alcohol; 98% new French and 2% new Hungarian oak)

(raised for two years in 100 percent new French oak barrels) Brilliant ruby-red. Potent black currant, cherry liqueur, vanilla and potpourri aromas are complicated by an exotic Indian spice nuance that builds steadily with aeration. Supple, round and appealingly sweet, offering palate-staining black and blue fruit, cola, mocha and floral pastille flavors and a hint of smokiness. Finishes sappy, smooth and extremely long, displaying harmonious tannins and a late jolt of flowers. There's a robust 15 percent alcohol driving this flamboyant wine.

The 1990 Opus One is another powerful wine built on a serious core of tannin and structure. There is plenty of richness in the glass, but a little less intensity and complexity than the best wines of this era. I imagine the 1990 will still be a delicious wine in another decade. The 1990 is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 3% Merlot.

This is one of the finest Opus Ones to date, offering a dark ruby/purple color, as well as a striking, intense bouquet of sweet licorice intermixed with blackberries, cassis, plums, and saddle leather. This seamless, full-bodied wine is more velvety-textured, opulent, and succulent than past vintages. The mid-palate is expansive and chewy. The long finish is filled with glycerin, ripe fruit, and sweet tannin. Drink this impressive, user-friendly yet richly concentrated effort over the next 15 years. Tel. James Suckling (95)

Sage and mint in the nose, it is Opus style. Full bodied and layered, with polished tannins and wonderful length. This is tight, but fascinating still. This wine has a good future, very juicy, and will only keep getting better. Don't touch this until 2014.

North America is somewhat difficult to pigeonhole – though technically ‘new world’, it is in the Northern Hemisphere, and the wines have the same devoted fan base (and often first-growth prices) as many classic European wines. Cooler climate Cabs, Merlots, Pinots, Chardonnays and Rieslings with old-world structure can all be found, though if anything is lacking by comparison it is consistency. South America is an exciting new melting pot of styles and flavours with a range of soils types and altitudes – taking international varietals and finishing with French winemaking techniques, or in the case of Argentinian Malbec, adopting a largely unloved grape and making it their own.
